Windows 11 26H2 Is Here: How to Install It Safely

Microsoft announced the Windows 11 2026 Update on September 29, 2026, and Windows 11 26H2 is now rolling out to eligible devices. If you have managed 24H2 or 25H2 machines before, this one will feel familiar, because it does not install like a traditional feature update. This guide covers what the release actually changes, how to get it, and the support dates that matter for your fleet.

What Windows 11 26H2 is

Windows 11 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package, a small update that switches on features already present on the device. Versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same servicing branch and codebase, so most of the required components arrive earlier through monthly cumulative updates. The result is a small download and a single restart instead of a full operating system upgrade. Microsoft describes the release in its Windows 11 26H2 overview on Microsoft Learn.

For a look at the feature side, see our overview of Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2 features. This article focuses on deployment and lifecycle.

Who can install it

Eligible devices running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 can move to Windows 11 26H2 through the enablement package, KB5121794. Microsoft is using a controlled feature rollout, so the offer will not appear on every device at once, and devices with a known compatibility problem can be held back by a safeguard. The Windows release health hub is where Microsoft publishes known issues, safeguards and rollout progress.

There is one exception worth knowing. PCs that shipped with Windows 11 26H1 cannot update to 26H2, because 26H1 is built on a different Windows core. Microsoft says those devices will get an upgrade path in a future release instead.

How to get it on a single PC

Open Settings, go to Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Select Check for updates, and when the Windows 11 version 26H2 offer appears, choose Download and install. Restart when Windows asks.

The enablement package needs a recent cumulative update to be installed first, so run Windows Update until nothing is pending. Reports differ on the exact prerequisite KB number, so confirm it on the Microsoft Support page for KB5121794 before you script anything. If you need to install the package manually, you can run the downloaded .msu file with wusa.exe:

wusa.exe C:\Temp\<KB5121794-package>.msu /quiet /norestartCode language: HTML, XML (xml)

How admins should roll it out

For managed devices, Microsoft says Windows 11 26H2 is available through Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center, alongside the usual update management tools. The Windows Experience Blog post on how to get the 2026 Update covers the commercial options. Microsoft’s own guidance in the IT pro’s guide to Windows 11 26H2 is to validate the release in pilot rings first.

Because the package is small, the risk is less about download size and more about policy behavior after activation. Pilot on a few real device models, and watch your Intune or Configuration Manager reporting. If your reports ever show a feature update policy as succeeded while the device disagrees, see our post on why an Intune policy shows succeeded when it has not applied.

You can also inventory your current versions and editions with a one-liner:

Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion' |
Select-Object ProductName, EditionID, DisplayVersion, CurrentBuild, UBRCode language: JavaScript (javascript)

Support dates you need to check

Installing Windows 11 26H2 resets the support lifecycle. Home and Pro editions get 24 months, and Enterprise and Education editions get 36 months. The more urgent date is on the old side. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach the end of updates on October 13, 2026, while 24H2 Enterprise and Education stay supported until October 12, 2027.

That edition split matters when you plan. A device list that only says “24H2” cannot tell a Pro machine that is two weeks from its deadline from an Enterprise machine with another year. Check EditionID in your inventory first, and move any 24H2 Home or Pro devices to 25H2 or 26H2 before the deadline.

Clean install and ISO options

If you are installing from scratch, or coming from an older release than 24H2, you will use installation media instead of the enablement package. Microsoft’s download page offers the Installation Assistant, the Media Creation Tool and a disk image (ISO). Check the download page for the architecture you need, because ARM64 media availability can lag behind x64. For an in-place upgrade from an ISO, mount it in Windows and run setup.exe.

If you manage Group Policy, download the matching ADMX templates from Microsoft when they are published for the release, so new policies show up in your central store.

Verify the installed version

After the restart, run winver or the PowerShell command above. You should see version 26H2 and a build number in the 26300 range, which is what Microsoft used in its Release Preview post. If the version still shows 24H2 or 25H2, check that the latest cumulative update is installed and that your device is not blocked by a safeguard hold.
